Anna Lake is a 538-acre mesotrophic (moderately fertile) lake located in south-central Otter Tail County approximately four miles north of Underwood, MN. The immediate watershed is composed primarily of agricultural land interspersed with hardwood woodlots. The maximum depth is 55 feet; however, 69% of the lake is 15 feet or less in depth. The 2025 Secchi disk reading was 12.1 feet. Historical Secchi disk readings have ranged from 4.0 to 9.3 feet. The majority of the shoreline of Anna Lake remains undeveloped. A DNR owned concrete public access is located along the southwest shoreline. Shoal water substrates consist primarily of sand and gravel. Hardstem bulrush and common cattail are prevalent along the entire shoreline of the lake. Emergent aquatic plants such as bulrush and cattail provide valuable fish and wildlife habitat and are critical for maintaining good water quality. They protect shorelines and lake bottoms and absorb and break down polluting chemicals. Emergent plants provide spawning areas for fish such as Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and Panfish. They also serve as important nursery areas for all species of fish. Because of their ecological value, emergent plants may not be removed without a DNR permit. To maintain the excellent water quality and angling that this lake has to offer, it is imperative to preserve the quality of the aquatic habitat. A special gillnetting survey was conducted in August 2025 to analyze the Walleye and Northern Pike populations. Walleyes ranged in length from 10.0 to 26.4 inches with a mean length and weight of 14.9 inches and 1.2 pounds. The 2021-, 2022-, and 2024- year classes are strong and should provide good Walleye angling for several years. Walleyes attain an average length of 16.1 inches at four years of age. Northern Pike ranged in length from 22.6 to 29.6 inches with an average length and weight of 24.8 inches and 2.9 pounds. Northern Pike exhibit good growth rates with an average length of 25.4 inches at five years of age. There are no special or experimental harvest regulations in effect for Anna Lake. Anglers can maintain or improve the quality of angling by practicing selective harvest. Selective harvest encourages the release of medium to large fish while allowing the harvest of more abundant smaller fish for table fare. Releasing the medium to large fish will ensure that the lake will have enough spawning age fish on an annual basis and will provide anglers with more opportunities to catch large fish in the future.
