Glacier Pond One is an 18-acre designated stream trout lake located 13 miles east of Ely in the Superior National Forest off the Fernberg Trail. It is comparable to Jammer in the Tower Area. The lake was surveyed during Spring, as is typical for some of the stream trout lakes in the Tower Area. Due to the early Spring sampling and expected lack of poor water conditions, temperature and dissolved oxygen were not measured during the survey. Previous summer and winter checks suggest thermal habitat can be marginal during periods of protracted heat or long winters, but rainbow trout tend to persist. The lake has clear water, with a historic mean Secchi visibility of 11 feet, and a maximum depth of 27 feet. Aquatic vegetation is sparse, with bottom substrates split between muck in the west end and gravel/cobble to the east. Access is by a short carry down a steep set of stairs and is best suited to canoes or small boats. Parking is limited to a couple of vehicles and trailers are not recommended. The Summer Home Road is not plowed beyond the gravel pit in the winter and extends the trail to the lake by 300 yards. This survey used small mesh trap nets which allow the trout to be released. Rainbow trout numbers were 0.9/net. Lengths ranged from 12 to 15 inches, and average length was 13 inches. Two year classes appeared to be present, with 12-14 inch fish likely from last year's stocking and the 15 inch a possible carryover from 2023. Rainbow trout yearlings are annually stocked in the spring.
