Field note · Minnesota stocks by year, not by truck day: walleye fry go in within weeks of ice-out, fingerlings and yearlings mostly in fall, and stream trout in spring and fall. A row here means the fish went in during that year; DNR adds the year's rows after the fact, so the current year can look empty until winter.

Catch per net (CPUE) is the DNR survey's count per gill net or trap net set; higher means more of that species were sampled, not a fishing forecast. Top species per gear shown; where we have no verified common name for a DNR code, the code itself is shown.

Grave Lake (DOW# 11-0086; Lake Class 23) is a 372-acre lake with 132 littoral acres located north of Remer, MN. There is a DNR owned public access on the east shore. Grave Lake has 6.20 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 55 feet. The DNR has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Grave Lake is in lake class 23; lakes in this class are generally very clear, very deep, have a low percentage of shallow water area, and have very irregularly shaped shoreline with many bays or points. Other Lake Class 23 lakes in the Walker Area include Hay (DOW# 11-0199), Horseshoe (DOW# 11-0358), Island (DOW# 11-0102), Mule (DOW# 11-0200), and Ponto (DOW# 11-0234) lakes. The lake is primarily managed for Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike and secondarily for Bluegill, Black Crappie, Yellow Perch, and Walleye. The lake was initially surveyed in 1949 and 13 resurveys, population assessments or natural reproduction checks have occurred since then. A nearshore survey was conducted to assess the populations of both game and non-game fish species. A total of 10 sampling stations 100 feet long were evenly spaced around the lakeshore and sampled by backpack electrofishing, and when conditions allowed also with either a 15' or 50' seine (1/8th inch mesh). Soft bottom and heavy vegetation prevented the use of seines at three sampling sites. A total of 13 species were sampled, including five species that are intolerant of habitat disturbance: (Banded Killifish, Iowa Darter, Least Darter, Mottled Sculpin and Mimic Shiner). This nearshore survey will be combined with standard survey assessment data to calculate a Fish-Based Index of Biotic Integrity (FIBI) score. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health by the types of fish species present and comparing it to what is expected for this type of lake. The FIBI Tool-2 was used for scoring and resulted in an FIBI score of 78, which is above both the impairment threshold (45) and the exceptional threshold (64) for this tool.
