Neglige Lake is located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) within the Superior National Forest and is a non-motorized lake. It is approximately 26 miles northeast of Ely and is accessible by a 300 yard portage from Trader Lake. The maximum depth on this 28 acre lake is 58 feet and the water color was light green at the time of this survey. Neglige Lake was thermally stratified on June 9, 2015 with a surface temperature of 64 F and a bottom temperature of 40 F. Ample oxygen for trout was retained to a depth of 30 feet; the temperature was 41 F at this depth. As in the past, this assessment found excellent water quality in Neglige Lake. Although the water was light green, it still had very good clarity and a good oxygen profile. Neglige is typical of lakes stocked with stream trout in the Ely Area, except that it is deeper and more fertile. Most of the shoreline is rocky with some muck in the bays. A fair amount of cedar has fallen into the water. White cedar, spruce, and thick balsam fir line the edges of the lake. Rainbow trout fingerlings were stocked annually from 1980 to 1988. From 1989 to the present various strains of brook trout fingerlings have been annually stocked. The 2015 survey showed Neglige Lake had one of the highest trout catches of the 26 stream trout lakes in the Tower Fisheries Management Area. The average catch by weight of 23 lbs/net was second in the Tower Area but the number of fish caught was also high. The 41 brook trout caught were a range of sizes from 7 to 21 inches. The average size was 13 inches and 34% of the fish were larger than this. There were three general size groups around 7, 12, and 18 inches. Sampling showed that trout fed mostly on insects, but also crayfish and minnows were being consumed.
