Catch per net (CPUE) is the DNR survey's count per gill net or trap net set; higher means more of that species were sampled, not a fishing forecast. Top species per gear shown; where we have no verified common name for a DNR code, the code itself is shown.
Norway Lake is a 12 acre designated stream trout lake located approximately 18 miles east of Babbitt. The access is located at the end of Forest Service 388 and has a small parking area for two or three vehicles. This road is rough and brushy, a four wheel drive vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. The access trail is approximately 600 feet long from the parking area to the lake. There is a remote campsite located north of the access on the east shore of the lake. Norway Lake is managed for Splake with 1,000 fingerlings stocked each fall. A fisheries survey was completed in fall of 2022 to monitor the Splake population and evaluate stocking success. Splake were captured in higher numbers than in the last survey, but the average length was small at approximately 10 inches with the biggest fish measuring 18 inches long. Splake ranged in age from one to four years old with more than 50 percent of the sample estimated to be age-1. At the time of the survey, the average length of age-1 fish was about eight inches, age-2 fish average 11 inches, and age-3 fish ranged from 12 to 15 inches long. Overall, Splake had normal growth relative to other populations in the area. At this time, the lake supports a good population of Splake for anglers to target and the stocking regime appears to be effective.
