Catch per net (CPUE) is the DNR survey's count per gill net or trap net set; higher means more of that species were sampled, not a fishing forecast. Top species per gear shown; where we have no verified common name for a DNR code, the code itself is shown.
Tofte is a 134-acre designated stream trout lake located 14 miles east of Ely off the Fernberg Road. It is clear, has a maximum depth of 73 feet, and has generally rocky shorelines interspersed with areas of muck. Aquatic vegetation is largely limited to the shallow north bay. Four primitive campsites are present around the lake, and development is limited to two private parcels. Trails branch from the landing and provide several shore fishing opportunities, though there are no designated piers. Rainbow trout yearlings are annually stocked and splake fingerlings every other year. Fifty-nine splake were sampled for a catch rate of 1.1/net. This was identical to the long-term average for Tofte. Lengths ranged from five to 24 inches with an average of 14 inches, which is somewhat higher than typical. Quarter-inch trap nets captured an additional 11 splake including the largest fish at 25 inches. Thirteen rainbow trout were sampled for a catch rate of 0.3/net. This was also identical to the long-term average. Rainbow trout are difficult to sample with survey gear, especially in a lake as large and deep as Tofte. Lengths ranged from 12 to 18 inches with an average of 15 inches higher than typical.
